Summary
In “Divergent”by Veronica Roth, a girl named Beatrice Prior has some very
difficult decisions to make. The world in this book is split into five factions,
and each faction is based on some virtue. There is Candor, Abnegation,
Dauntless, Erudite, and Amity. Candor believes that you should always be honest,
never saying anything but the truth. Abnegation believes in selflessness, always
help others. Dauntless believes in bravery over all. Erudite believes in
knowledge. Amity believes in peace, always getting along. They do not always get
along with such different views, but they mostly stay
separated.
Every year in this book, the kids who have turned sixteen have to decide
which faction they are going to join. Once you choose a faction, you can not
change your mind. If you leave your faction, you can not join another. You will
live with in awful conditions, struggling to survive. Beatrice is makes a very
surprising choice at this ceremony, and everyone is shocked. Even she is amazed
by what she did. Also, from a test in her school, she gets results that she is
told she must hide. If she doesn’t, it could put her in serious danger. She
struggles with her difficult life, but she is a very strong
person.
With her new name, Tris, she has to go through many tests. She literally
has to fight for life. Along with these tests, she has to learn to live in an
environment completely new to her without much help. She has to learn who her
friends are as she competes to stay where she thinks she belongs. To go along
with that, she has romance issues with a man that it very different from her and
almost everyone around her. Tris fights through her bad odds all through the
book, never giving up. She surprises everyone around her. That includes
herself.
